SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY
A sports massage includes the therapist applying of a range of deep manipulative massage stroke, using a variety of techniques using thumbs, hands and elbows to attain moderate to deep pressure. Sports massage techniques can be used to target common sports injuries or dysfunctions such as muscular strains and tightness. However, sports massage isn’t just for sportsmen and women. Sports massage can also benefit an individual suffering from tight muscles due to occupational stress and demands.
WHAT IS SPORTS MASSAGE?
Maintenance massage can be used to reduce the risk of injury and maintain healthy muscles. The application of massage can reduce muscular tension, maintain flexibility and assist in the removal of waste products and the deliverance of nutrients to working muscles. It is also designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive, strenuous physical activity and trauma.
Pre-event massage includes the application of vigorous and rhythmic massage techniques known as Tapotement which includes hacking, beating and pounding which fires up the muscle fibres and prepare them for physical activity. Pre-event massage can improve tissue flexibility, maximise performance and reduce the risk of injury. Pre-event massage can also allow time for mental preparation prior to activity allowing individuals to “get in the zone”.
Post-event massage helps reduce pain, relive muscular tightness and prevents the delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS). The process uses slow massage strokes used to relax the muscles and increase blood circulation following an activity to assist in the removal of waste products and recovery.

FAQs
Does sports massage hurt?
Sports massage is a deep tissue massage so several people will experience some discomfort at some point during the treatment. Your therapist will be in constant communication with you to ensure we keep within your personal comfort zone.
Can I have a sports massage if I don’t play sport?
Yes. Sports massage is for everyone, although some techniques many not be necessary. We have many clients who work in offices that we treat for back, neck and shoulder pain caused by poor posture and sitting for long periods of time.
How does sports massage work?
Sports massage works deep into the specific affected muscles and through a range of specialised techniques helps the muscles to reclaim their normal elasticity. It stretches muscle fibres, releasing tension and adhesions in the fascia which can cause restricted movement and pain.
Are there any side effects?
After a Sports massage treatment it is common to experience sore and tired muscles. This can last up to 48 hrs depending on the current state of your muscles. This recovery time often is reduced with regular massage sessions.
Although not as common another side effect can be mild bruising which some people are more susceptible to than others. These side effects are nothing to worry about and are completely normal. But please talk to your massage therapist if you have any concerns.
